Credit Repair through the DBRA:
The Debt Bondage Repair Act (DBRA), enacted as part of the National Defense Authorization Act of 2022, protects survivors of severe trafficking from having adverse information related to their trafficking appear on their credit reports. This Act ensures that Consumer Reporting Agencies (CRAs) cannot include negative credit items resulting from human trafficking or sex trafficking in a consumer’s report. In June 2022, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) established a comprehensive rule under the DBRA to help survivors remove these adverse credit entries, providing a clear process for seeking credit relief.
How to Access Credit Blocking Services
Our credit block page provides links to the procedures for disputing credit items with each major credit bureau. This will guide you through the steps to leverage the protections offered by the DBRA and seek relief from any negative credit impacts resulting from trafficking.
Please note you will need these documents to proceed:
A state-issued ID/License
A copy of your credit report from each bureau
A victim determination letter (Survivor Source can provide this)
A list of items (due to exploitation) to be removed/blocked from your credit report
