Rise up from the ashes. Fly like a phoenix.
A peer support specialist is a person with "lived experience" who has been trained to support those who struggle with mental health, psychological trauma, or substance use. Their personal experience of these challenges provides peer support specialists with expertise that professional training cannot replicate. Because peer recovery support specialists have often experienced similar challenges to those faced by individuals in treatment, they offer a valuable and empathetic perspective, fostering meaningful connections. While peer support is not a substitute for professional counseling, it can significantly aid the transition to recovery when used alongside counseling. Peer support is particularly beneficial in communities with limited access to mental health and addiction treatment services.
Specializations of Peer Recovery Support Specialists
Peer recovery support specialists may specialize in mental health, trauma, addiction, or family support, depending on state regulations. They provide targeted support, understanding the unique circumstances and needs of each person.
Peer recovery specialists serve as role models for self-care and offer support in numerous ways, such as helping clients identify and build on their strengths, set personal goals, and access appropriate healthcare resources. They advocate for clients while also encouraging self-advocacy. These specialists work in diverse settings, including drug and alcohol recovery programs, community centers, hospitals, and through telehealth services.
The requirements to become a peer recovery specialist vary by state. Typically, this includes having at least a high school diploma or GED, and obtaining certification from a state agency or certification board. Credentialing often involves completing an approved training program, acquiring supervised experience, and passing any required exams.
(Note: even if it says “free” there are some fees for certain training usually around 25$ - 100$)
